“Café de los Maestros”
Director: Miguel Kohan
Production : 2008
Tango isn’t just a dance. On the Rio de la Plata it’s a way of life. Tango belongs to Argentina, in particular to cities like Buenos Aires and Rosario or to Montevideo in Uruguay, where the tango is much more than just a nostalgic echo of the past. Many great old men – and women – of tango live here, and they still perform, some of them have done so for nearly 80 years. The film presents some of these exceptional artists, with creators of the classic repertoires, founders of different styles and schools, as well as members of bands and orchestras that were famous in the 40s and 50s, the “Golden Age of the Tango”. Some of them have been famous abroad for a very long time, others are still a quiet tip outside Argentina.

The Argentine composer and musician Gustavo Santaollala (twice Academy Award winner for his film music to BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and to BABEL) acts as a guide. He presents the masters of tango to the spectators – the band leader Leopoldo Federico, Lágrima Ríos and their guitarist Aníbal Arias, the incomparable Duo José Libertella and Luis Stazo. Their performances and those of other legendary tango characters reach an unforgettable climax at a tango evening in the famous Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.
A new film, and already a legend. |
